Care Revolution at KiTa solidarity demo in Göttingen

Aktuelles – 01. June 2015 – Action
On Saturday, 30 May 2015, the Alliance for Good Care Work and Gender Equality called for a demonstration in solidarity with the strikers in the social and educational services in Göttingen. The Care Revolution was also there! You can find a short report from the alliance here. Our speech:The English word "care" means care, but also attentiveness, care, nurturing and prudence. All people do care work - for themselves and for other people. We cook for ourselves or for others, we look after our health, we listen to a friend, we bring up children and care for relatives, we clean our homes. Some of these activities are carried out by paid professionals such as nursery nurses or carers. For the most part, however, they are carried out by unpaid and invisible women in private households. But even the paid care sectors are treated as inferior and paid correspondingly poorly. This can be shown particularly well using the example of nursery nurses: The high-value task of caring for and educating children is devalued by the assumption that women can do all this work naturally. In addition, their love of work is shamelessly exploited and reflected in poor working conditions. A 5-year unpaid training as a childcare worker is contrasted with a poorly paid and highly demanding job. More and more people are faced with the challenge of balancing paid work with caring for themselves and others. Employees are overstretched and leisure time is becoming a foreign concept. In addition, real wages are falling, the boundaries of employment relationships are being removed and various forms of precarious employment are being created. That is why we are here today, we are demonstrating for change! People must be understood as social beings, all people need care! Human cooperation and solidarity must be placed at the centre of politics and the economy. Living together in this society must be based on human needs. The focus must no longer be on profit maximisation, but on our human needs, contrary to the capitalist logic of exploitation! We are worth so much more! What we need is existential security for all people, for example through an unconditional basic income. What we need is a reduction in gainful employment, improved working conditions, higher wages and social security. What we need is more time for care work, more time for political work, more time for cultural activities and more time for leisure! What we need is a CARE REVOLUTION!
