First steps of the Care Revolution in the Rhine-Ruhr region

Kalender-Icon 20. January 2017
On 12.12.16, Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences opened its doors for the event "Care Revolution - Care work under pressure. The need for a care revolution". It was organised by the Department of Cultural and Social Sciences as part of a course in the Empowerment Studies Master's programme and gave not only students and lecturers at the university, but also many of the actors in the field of care work present, a theoretical insight into the problems of care work in modern, neoliberal everyday life. Gabriele Winker, author of the book "Care Revolution. Wege in eine solidarische Gesellschaft" (Care Revolution: Paths to a Society of Solidarity), concisely presented the results of her many years of research and motivated the audience in her refreshing way to stand up together for new alternatives. Katharina Schwabedissen from ver.di NRW, Department of Health, Social Services, Welfare and Churches, and Melanie Stitz from the newspaper "Wir Frauen - das feministische Blatt" enriched the event with personal references to the topic, practical experiences in the commitment to improving conditions and future perspectives. The open discussion that followed provided space for questions, suggestions and brainstorming. To summarise, it became clear that awareness of the problem is not enough, but that "Care Revolution" thrives on joint commitment. Following on from this, a number of ideas have already been developed on how networking can also be realised in the Rhine-Ruhr region. These are a good basis for the first networking meeting, which will take place soon on 20 January 2017 at 18:00 and for which many interested parties have already registered. The aim is to collect and discuss further steps, ideas and resources for networking in an open setting with all interested parties. Anyone who was unable to attend this event is also cordially invited to attend. The venue and further information about the meeting will be announced in due course. Informal registration is requested at info.care-revolution@hs-duesseldorf.de. A big thank you goes to all those present who contributed to making this event an evening of inspiration and new perspectives for many.
