More appearance than reality? Emancipation and equal rights for women in the GDR

There are many myths and legends surrounding the position of women in the GDR - nevertheless, it is clear that the social position of women in the GDR was better than in today's Federal Republic. In this respect, today it is repeatedly assessed that the current situation for women from the GDR represents an emancipatory step backwards.

The lecture will look at the historical development of the social situation and professional opportunities (including childcare facilities) - because these can be assessed quite differently over 40 years of the GDR.

The social commitment and activities of women in the GDR and the FRG cannot be compared one-to-one, i.e. even if there was no women's movement inthe GDR[1] analogous to that in the FRG, there were many opportunities for social commitment.

[1] The women's movement in the GDR was only mentioned in the 1980s; it was primarily groups such as "Women for Peace" that were mainly involved in this topic.

After the speaker's presentation, there will be ample opportunity for dialogue and discussion.
