Event organised by the Unconditional Basic Income Initiative Group Frankfurt as part of the "Drüber gebabbelt!" discussion series

South African President Ramaphosa promised a basic income (BIG) in this year's address to the nation (SONA). The debate goes back to the first campaigns during the reorganisation of the South African constitution in the 1990s, when the transformation of apartheid society also had a socio-economic dimension. The activists at the time failed; some were later part of the pilot project in Namibia, which successfully paid out a BIG to a village community for two years. Since then, many projects have followed worldwide, and the pandemic has also helped to emphasise the need for basic security.
Will South Africa now be the first country on the continent to introduce a basic income?

Simone Knapp is a consultant at the Church Centre for Southern Africa at Werkstatt Ökonomie and has accompanied the pilot project in Namibia from the very beginning.
