A vacant shopping centre - and then what? The Sorge! ins Parkcenter initiative shows how it can become a place for neighbourhood and community provision.

The ParkCenter in the Treptow-Köpenick district is one of the many large shopping centres in Berlin that have been affected by high vacancy rates in recent years. As it is the central supply location in the Alt-Treptow neighbourhood, this is a problem for the older residents on average.

The Sorge! ins Parkcenter initiative wants to take the situation as an opportunity to show how such a building can become a permanent central location with services for the common good for the neighbourhood - a place that meets all the needs of social coexistence and can be operated without private profit.

How a public care centre can be realised in the privately owned building is presumably a long road that the initiative intends to successfully travel with the intensive involvement of residents, networking with related projects and growing public pressure.

Birgit Wend (Initiative Sorge! Ins Parkcenter) is a retired urban planner. After a period as an assistant at the TU Berlin and several years in her own office, she worked mainly in urban regeneration with a focus on social infrastructure - including the IBA 84/87 in Kreuzberg, the redevelopment in Prenzlauer Berg and the urban regeneration in Gelsenkirchen.

The event will take place on the second floor of the Dondorf printing works (2og:dondorf, Gabriel-Riesser-Weg 3).

The event is part of the series Jenseits von Privateigentum. The programme can be found here: https: //ohdk.de/programm/detail/jenseits-von-privateigentum-365
