1 May in Frankfurt: militant care block at DGB demo

Aktuelles – 15. May 2021
On 1 May, as activists for a place of care in Frankfurt am Main, we took up space alongside the feminist strike collective and together with employees from Kita Frankfurt at the DGB demo with a care block and practically created a feminist place for care. Shortly before the start of the demo at the Hauptwache, we put the last of our demands on signs together, and during the demo we made it clear with joint chants such as "What solution - Care Revolution!" that Labour Day must also be a day on which the gendered organisation of work in our society is fundamentally up for debate. This enabled our care block, which was particularly recognisable thanks to its purple colour, to make itself heard among the 3,000 or so demonstrators and passers-by. We also remained loud during the final rally at Opernplatz, where we once again used purple barrier tape and a megaphone to make our voices heard for care (work). We achieved our action goal of jointly drawing attention to the problematic link between care and gender and to our chronic underpayment and overwork in care professions. Even beyond 1 May, it is important to create spaces for care and to demand fundamental changes in care, in daycare centres, in the cleaning sector, in social work, in sex work and in the domestic work "division"! We will keep at it!
