6 Nov: Discussion on the Care Revolution in Duisburg

Aktuelles – 19. October 2015
Friday 6 November at 7 p.m. Duisburg Syntopia, Gerokstr. 2, 47053 Duisburg (next stop "Pauluskirche"; http://www.syntopia.info/anfahrt/)http://www.syntopia.info, http://duisburg.fau.orgWhether in hospitals or nursing homes, care has to become faster and faster. Staff numbers are being cut, but fewer staff have to do the same tasks in less time and work is being outsourced to an ever greater extent, thus hierarchising employees even more and playing them off against each other. These more restrictive requirements include the fact that an average of 3 minutes is scheduled for cleaning a hospital room and 4 minutes for talking to patients. These working conditions not only mean that employees are constantly overworked, but are also under constant stress and often suffer from burnout as a result. These effects are exacerbated by the poor pay in this sector. There is little or no involvement in decision-making structures. However, just like the employees, the patients also bear part of the burden and often also the suffering of this development. There are scandals in nursing homes and hospitals because the elderly and sick are not (or cannot be) cared for to the necessary extent, thus exacerbating their situation. But how can this development be stopped and what does it have to do with feminist economic criticism? In Germany alone, around 2 million family carers have to bear the brunt of the failure of society and the state to assume responsibility. There are initial protests and strikes in hospitals, but employees alone cannot change the situation. The Care Revolution network is forming an alliance of employees, stakeholders and relatives. Something is moving, but how can it continue? *The event will also provide an opportunity to get to know the [Care Revolution Network](http://care-revolution.org) and its work, which is holding its nationwide (and open) network meeting in Duisburg on 7-8 November.
