In our #CAREelevant podcast series, people who perform paid and unpaid care work or are dependent on this work have their say. They report on how their work and everyday lives have changed during the coronavirus pandemic and what social paths they would like to see out of and after the crisis.

The coronavirus pandemic has made it clear to many people that care work is systemically relevant. People in the healthcare and nursing professions are rightly receiving a lot of recognition and gratitude for their efforts. The importance of schools and daycare centres, not just for education, but as social spaces for children and young people, is also becoming more than clear. The closure of these facilities also shows the central importance of unpaid care work. We don't want to stop at thanks and recognition, but want to advocate for far-reaching structural change in the economy and society. What is being labelled the coronavirus crisis these days is a crisis that has its origins in a social system that is working against us all. The solution can only be to change this economic system, which is turning more and more areas of life into a commodity, turning hospitals and care facilities into objects of profit, subordinating time for friendly and family solidarity and care relationships to gainful employment and closing the borders for people on the run. Instead, we are fighting for a society that places care work at the centre of the system and promotes solidarity - not only in times of coronavirus, but always and everywhere.
