Space for care in Osnabrück city centre

Aktuelles – 29. August 2021

In August, the "Platz für Sorge" campaign in Osnabrück briefly renamed Adolf-Reichwein-Platz to Platz für Sorge. Adolf-Reichwein-Platz is one of the few places in Osnabrück where the needs of people bringing up children are taken into account. Care work is usually and for the most part carried out by women in society and in the family. This care work, such as cleaning, bringing up children, cooking and caring, is generally invisible. They take place behind closed doors. At Adolf-Reichwein-Platz, however, there is at least some "space for care" - in the middle of Osnabrück's city centre: surrounded by cafés and pubs, within walking distance of various shops, there is a playground. Young families can often be seen there simply enjoying a good time; mothers can look after their children there for once without being isolated in neighbourhood playgrounds or at home.

By renaming the square "Platz für Sorge", we not only want to draw attention to our initiative, but also oppose the unacceptable conditions in paid and unpaid care work.

We are in favour of a society that is geared towards people's needs and in which sufficient time and resources are available for this. Let us grow together into a large care movement and fight in solidarity: for a good life for all!
