Open letter to the "Alliance for a strong and future-proof welfare state"

Aktuelles – 03. May 2026

In view of the current extensive attacks on existing welfare state safeguards, major trade unions and social organisations founded an alliance for a strong and future-proof welfare state in March 2026. Its declaration can be found here.

Care activists, including some members of the Care Revolution network, have written an open letter on this issue. In it, they argue that the existing forms of social security should not simply be defended against attacks, but fundamentally transformed. From the open letter: "Material security and time sovereignty, i.e. power over one's own life, are necessary for us as a society to stop destroying our own livelihoods. We need a reliable, non-stigmatising social security system that really reaches everyone and does not force people into bureaucratic mills or the so-called labour market. Universality and unconditionality are the key."

We document this statement below. The open letter can also be found on the website of the Initiativgruppe Bedingungsloses Grundeinkommen Rhein-Main with the current number of signatories: https://bge-rheinmain.org/offener-brief-an-das-bundnis-fur-einen-starken-und-zukunftssicheren-sozialstaat. Anyone who would like to co-sign the letter is invited to send an e-mail to bge-rhein-main@posteo.de with: "Co-sign open letter of the Welfare State Alliance" and first name, surname, personal details if applicable.
