Square for Care in Leipzig - Square for Care in Leipzig

Aktuelles – 13. March 2021
[gallery size="large" ids="4450,4449,4448"] The "Platz für Sorge" campaign was also launched in Leipzig on 8 March 2021. Here you can find an impression of the day as a video. As part of the strike week of the feminist strike alliance Leipzig, Karl-Heine-Platz in the west of Leipzig was renamed "Für Sorge - Platz". Care utensils and facts about care and emotional labour were hung on a washing line across the square, which borders a playground. The "Mili-Tanz" collective opened the rally with a rousing performance in which all those present were able to participate in the second part. In the first speech, our Care Revolution regional group presented the Platz Für Sorge campaign and our demands. In the next speech, the connection between capitalism and patriarchy, as well as the (im)possibility of striking care work, was discussed. DaMigra drew attention to the migration pay gap, i.e. the pay gap of 20% between women* of German origin and migrants*, which is due to the low pay of migrant workers in the care, cleaning, elderly care and domestic sectors. At an OpenMic, a single parent reported on her everyday struggles during the pandemic and a carer called for better psychological support and shorter working hours in care. Finally, a contribution from diversif called for a stronger intersectional approach to racism in the feminist movement in Leipzig. The (cis-male) support structure of the alliance provided the approximately 150 - 200 rally participants with coffee and cake after the event. The square remained renamed for a few more days - and hopefully we'll be back for another action in June.
